Literacy Packs In Lockdown

During ‘lock down’ we’ve been unable to go in to school as usual to hear children read. We know that many of the children we hear every week have few if any books at home so we needed to provide book packs fast and with limited resources. (We’re also great believers in making every penny work as hard as possible.) There are times when the power of facebook and the generosity of keen readers can come together as a fantastic force for good. We put a call out for children’s books and the offers came thick and fast. Within a week we had collected (on foot) more than 2,000 books from Julia Donaldson to Jacqueline Wilson, David Walliams to Tom Gates. Our local printers made up packs of paper and our Lib Dem councillor provided funds for felt tips, pens and crayons. We’ve been distributing packs ever since and they’ve been really making a difference. So thank you everyone for responding so quickly and in particular to all the young readers who willingly gave up their cherished favourite books. We’ve been inundated with thank you messages. ‘A big thank you for the books and craft packs. The children love them xx’
